Freight Glossary

Discover clear, concise definitions of freight and logistics terms in Ofload's glossary, designed to help you navigate the industry with ease.

Visibility

To view real-time information on the movement of shipments booked in the Ofload Platform.

Shipper

A company who needs to move freight and secure capacity whether that is by road, rail, sea.

Road2Zero

A project collaboration with our partners at Hiringa to decarbonise supply chains and lower transportation emissions. The objective is to set up a fleet of hydrogen & dual fuel trucks running a commercial pilot operating between NSW and QLD.

POD - Proof of Delivery

In order for the Carrier to be paid, they must provide POD documentation that must be signed/stamped by the receiver to acknowledge that the shipment was received.

Ofload Platform

A digital end-to-end freight management system to support logistics and freight specialists in managing their freight requirements.

Milestone

A significant event or status change in the shipment order process. This milestone is reflected in the Ofload Platform shipments feature.

Linehaul

This is the longer leg of the trip, often interstate. An example would be Brisbane to Perth or Sydney to Adelaide.

LTL - Less than Truckload

The shipment is a smaller volume and does not require an entire truck. When booking an LTL order, the Shipper requires space on the truck, rather than the whole trailer/s.

LCL - Less than Container Load

The shipment is a smaller volume and does not require the entire container.

Lanes

The route between pick-up and delivery. This can be a major city or specific suburb. An example of a lane would be Sydney to Melbourne, or Aubury to Geelong.

Futile

This is a charge that is applied when a transport operator has attempted to pick-up or deliver a shipment but is unable to perform this task due to a change in the originally quoted booking. Some examples of this would be:

  • The driver arrives, but the pick-up address that was provided is incorrect.
  • The driver arrives within the site hours provided, but the site is closed.
  • The driver arrives, but is told by the collection site that the order is cancelled or won't be ready until another day.

Fuel Levy

A fuel levy is a surcharge calculated to account for regional/seasonal variations in fuel costs. Ofload has a calculation for fuel levy which is aligned to the National Average from the Australian Institution of Petroleum (AIP).

FTL - Full Truckload

The Shipper requires the entire truck/trailer and therefore has a dedicated service. These orders do not need to be split up at a carrier depot, and will travel from the pick-up site to the delivery site with no additional stops.

FCL - Full Container Load

The shipment requires the full space of a container.

Dolly

A small platform with wheels used to transport heavy loads across short distances. Often used in warehouses and retail spaces to move pallets, boxes, and other heavy items.

Distribution Center (DC)

A warehouse where products are received, stored, and distributed to retail outlets or customers.

Demurrage

An additional charge due to waiting times that exceed the agreed time frame for loading and/or unloading.

Depot

A designated area where goods are stored prior to their distribution for sale.

Data Analytics Dashboard (Shippers)

A feature in the Ofload Platform that displays data insights in real-time, such as cost and performance metrics.

Data Analytics Dashboard (Carriers)

A feature in the Ofload Platform that displays data insights in real-time, such as DIFOT, milestone updates, mobile app usage, and POD upload.

DG - Dangerous Goods

A substance or article is a dangerous good if it is listed in the Australian Dangerous Goods (ADG) Code. There are 9 classes of Dangerous Goods, as below:

  • Class 1 (explosives)
  • Class 2 (gases)
  • Class 3 (flammable liquids)
  • Class 4 (flammable solids; substances liable to spontaneous combustion; substances which, on contact with water emit flammable gases)
  • Class 5 (oxidising substances and organic peroxides);
  • Division 6.1 (toxic substances)
  • Class 8 (corrosive substances)
  • Class 9 (miscellaneous dangerous substances and articles)
  • Class 3 (flammable liquids)

DIFOT - Delivered In Full On Time

This is one of the metrics that Shippers often rate performance on. If the Carrier delivers an order on or before the requested delivery date entered in the Ofload platform, it would be classed as a DIFOT hit. Anything delivered later than the requested delivery date would be classed as a DIFOT miss.

CoRsafe

Ofload’s CoR partner who manages CoR risks and provides the necessary training for employees regardless of their role.

CoR - Chain of Responsibility

CoR law ensures everyone who works with heavy vehicles – from the business that employs a driver to the place where goods are being delivered – is accountable for safety.

Carrier

A truck driver, truck operator or transport company that will be responsible for transporting the Shippers goods.

Carbon Analytics Platform

A feature in the Ofload Platform that allows Shippers to view and monitor their road freight carbon emissions.

Capacity

The physical space or transport available to move goods from one point to the other.

Booking Request

A request submitted by the Shipper to secure transportation.

AUSH Number

When a shipment is entered in the Ofload platform, a reference number is generated. This reference begins with AUSH, followed by a unique number to each shipment.
